We took off on what was a beautiful clear skied day, with myself and Geo looking to make amends for our previous trip up Vorlich by reaching Stuc A Chroin this time. Back around the outside rather than having to tackle that monstrosity all over again. As I said previously, I’m delighted to finally have Stuc a’Chroin in the bag. For an easier day, you can summit the wonderful Ben Vorlich and return via the same path. A steady, yet boggy path around the back where you descent Ben Vorlich and cut sideways. So lets just say, we absolutely smashed it out the park! Both of which, I’ve already done. As soon as our muddy, soaked boots touched it we seemed to all lift ourselves up and hold a solid, comfortable pace all the way to the end. It lies to the south of Ben Vorlich, which is itself bounded to the north by Loch Earn, and to the west by Loch Lubnaig. The path was clearly outlined (for most parts) so it was simple enough to follow. Ben Vorlich (984m) is a popular peak due to its easy access and the superb views from the summit. Pretty much coming down to the usual situation of us getting lost and making life difficult for ourselves. Followed the path, a little boggy at times so we had to find a drier route around. Once the terrain becomes a bit easier to walk on, the path fades through the bog. It’s far too easy to loose grip and the rocks aren’t stable. With the sheer incline though, it doesn’t take long to reach the final and more level part of the ascent. We enjoyed our time at the top of what was possibly one of the toughest climbs I had experienced so far. With the company I had on this hike it was full of laughs start to finish and we somehow found ways to make light out of all the situations we got ourselves stuck in. We found ourselves off the route a few times, it’s scary how easy it can happen. But just like the cliff face of Stuc A Chroin we persevered (as if we had a choice, we wanted to get home) and we eventually made it out the far end and back to the solid, dry path leading us back to the car down Ben Vorlich.
